Using the human body as inspiration, scientists have created a new self-healing concrete prototype that “fixes” cracks while they’re still small, avoiding any compromise to the cracked structure's strength.

Corrosion is one of the major threats for buildings along the Florida coast that can be caused by the salty air and tidal flooding. While high-rises are constructed with tougher codes and improved waterproofing methods than than what was standard decades ago, some research engineers believe that there are better ways to build more durable concrete structures with new developments in technology.

A team of researchers from Harvard University have found an alternative way to protect structures from the damages of vortex shedding, which is a periodic swirling flow pattern that can form behind a blunt object as fluid moves past it. A deep water marine sponge, Euplectella aspergillum, has a complex skeletal structure that can suppress vortex shedding better than most current technologies.
